Steelmaking accounts for 7-8% of global CO2 emissions, with over 80% of these emissions resulting from the reduction of iron ore to metal iron in a blast furnace. An alternative, known as Direct Reduced Iron (DRI), can replace coal in ironmaking. When renewable hydrogen and electricity are used (HDRI), this approach can produce near-zero emissions metal iron. If Australia can take advantage of its iron ore and renewable energy resources to export green iron in place of iron ore, it is estimated that Australia could enable: 3x increase in the value of iron ore exports to ~$386 billion annually by 2060. 3x the carbon dioxide abatement of Australia's current domestic emissions – equal to roughly 4% of the global total.
