Rotator Cuff Exercises With Resistance Bands | San Diego Sports Chiropractic

Rotator cuff exercises with resistance bands is a classic and effective way to train the rotator cuff. The rotator cuff is a combination of 4 muscles that provide dynamic stability to the shoulder joint. With a properly functioning rotator cuff and stable shoulder, the larger muscles that provide big powerful movements can perform without causing shoulder injury. If the rotator cuff is injured, weak, or not properly trained, further injury to the shoulder is likely during certain shoulder movements. Banded rotator cuff exercises are an excellent way to train the rotator cuff effectively and safely. In our opinion, these exercises get a bad wrap, and are said to be “too easy” or “don’t train the rotator cuff in a meaningful way”. Well, we disagree. We often find people do not use proper technique when performing these exercises, do them too quickly, do not do enough of them, and are not consistent. These exercises are great to bring awareness to the rotator cuff and are a foundation to more challenging rotator cuff exercises in the future. Tips When performing these exercises, it is very important to only move the upper arm through rotation. Any other movement is recruiting different muscles that will not effectively train the rotator cuff. Move slowly through the motion with a thoughtful squeeze through the rotator cuff muscles. 3 x 10 is a common prescription for all exercises. We prefer, do the exercise correctly and feel a good “exercise burn” in the rotator cuff. It may be 10, 15, 20 repetitions, go until you feel the muscle working. If you get to 30 repetitions without feeling much of challenging, increase band strength, Work pain free range of motion.
