Wait! I know that you're expecting pseudoscience in a youtube video about Near Death Experiences (NDEs), but I promise, we're going to look at some real research and what it actually shows. We're going to show that there are criteria for NDEs, suggesting that they do constitute a specific phenomenology. After NDEs, we'll see that people come back with different beliefs: they become less atheistic; they believe in an afterlife; they are more spiritual; some studies show an explicit belief in God. Some studies show that people actually shift towards universal spirituality, and move away from narrow, dogmatic religious beliefs. We'll look at one study that shows that NDEs have different effects from life-threatening experiences. We'll look at another study that showed why a "flatline EEG" is an important predictor of whether people have NDEs. Finally, we'll show that there are a few pharmaceutical and physiologic experiences that can simulate some, but not all aspects of an NDE. I really want to know what you all think though! Have any of you had a near death experience? Do you know someone who has? Has this research changed what you think? Citations: Greyson B. The near-death experience scale.
