How to Style Summer Gloves - 4 Outfits! | Carolina Pinglo

Ever wonder how to style summer gloves?? In todays video I’m showing you 4 different outfits featuring gloves from Cornelia James! I think summer gloves are an underrated accessory! They can add a touch of elegance and vintage glamour to an outfit. Summer gloves have been in fashion for most of history, but we often associate it with the Victorian period up until the mid 20th century. SHOP CORNELIA JAMES: If you are interested in the gloves shown in this video you can shop from the link below (AFFILIATE) https://www.corneliajames.com/?rfsn=5... HISTORY OF SUMMER GLOVES: Throughout history summer gloves were not just an accessory but a matter of social status. Dating back to the beginning of humanity, glove remains were even found in the tomb of Tutankhamen. At first gloves were a means of protection from the harsh living conditions, but always spoke to social standing. The more delicate and intricate the gloves were the higher you were in society (Clearly nothing has changed). Certain luxurious fabrics were reserved for royalty and other members of high society. In the 14th century it was expected for everyone to wear gloves no matter your social standing or weather. This leads me to the Victorian period (1837-1901) as we all know the Victorians were obsessed with status, they were very concerned with what clothes they wore and what that said about their social standing. Upper class women had delicate gloves to protect and keep their hands pristine (upper class meant you didn’t do manual labour) and working class women could use gloves to hide their rugged hands to appear to be from a higher class. During this period etiquette books would say that you should NEVER leave the house without wearing gloves no matter the weather. Longer gloves were also important for formal events. Even though everyone wore gloves there were special rules surrounding them. For example you could take them off to eat but you had to be seated when removing your gloves, after dinner when putting them back on, women had to be discrete. But it wasn’t just women that had to wear gloves, men also wore them. Since women were expected to wear white/ivory gloves in the summer, men had to a follow suit. The reasoning behind this is that if a man was a take a ladys hand and his hands had been sweating they could ruin the womens gloves. Gloves were also worn as a way to prevent the spread of germs and other diseases (Which is funny if you consider the current pandemic) In the Edwardian period (1901-1910) Gloves didn’t has as many rules like in the Victorian era but upper class women still abided by them. Gloves had to be tailored because wearing the wrong size gloves would indicate that you are from a lower class. In this time period you see a bit more range in colours like light green/blue, grey or lavender. In the 1920s gloves were no longer expected articles of clothing but were still worn for special occasions’ like weddings or large parties. In this time period you see more embroidery and embellishments to match the dresses worn by the flappers. The use of day-to-day gloves declined though the 1930s. Because of WWII gloves were rare in the 1940s, and were seen as a luxury that many women couldn’t obtain. This also came at a time were many women entered the workforce and were less concerned with these types of delicate accessories. However upper class women still wore them during the day to make their outfits look more elegant. The end of the war brought back more feminine clothes and thus the return of summer gloves! It was common to see women wear elbow length gloves even in the day time. Jackie Kennedy was seen wearing daytime gloves on numerous occasions. The 1960s brought the Youth quake, teens and young adults were dictating fashion ! They rejected anything old fashioned or that symbolized class status. Although rare, some women/girls wore bright coloured statement gloves to elevate their look! Which bring us to modern times! It is RARE to see anyone wearing gloves in the summer (except me lol) You mostly see it on magazine covers/editorials or very elegant events. I think its a great loss of elegance to an outfit….while I don’t think it should be a requirement to wear them it would be fun if they came back in style ! What do you think ??
