A school runs on information about children and young people but it can be difficult to find out how best to manage their information and protect their privacy. So how can schools deliver modern teaching methods and to also have robust privacy safeguards? What are the issues principals, parents, students, teachers, and school trustees should be aware of, talk about, and work on? Hear about the Island Bay School experience updating how it manages children’s personal information. It is presented by the school Deputy Principal, a Trustee, and a parent/privacy expert to provide you with a range of views and practical examples of managing privacy in schools. This webinar will look at the unique privacy challenges faced by schools. It looks to answer questions like: What does a good privacy policy look like? What supervision does the Board of Trustees need to provide? Who do you need consent from? When should you get it? How do you provide notices to children and young people? How do we decide what information can be shared and what shouldn’t? What is ok and what is not? How do you share information safely? What training do teachers need? How do you know if a new learning system is safe to use? How should schools respond to a requests for student’s information? What does a good complaints procedure look like? When to report breaches to the Privacy Commissioner? Presented by: Lee Patton, Director of the Advice Workshop, independent legal risk consultant and privacy adviser, Island Bay School parent. Jacqui Innes, Deputy Principal, Island Bay School. Cristin Jamieson, Trustee, Island Bay School.
