Today Dr. Abhishek Shukla explained in detail about Pancreatitis. It is inflammation of the pancreas, an organ that produces digestive enzymes and hormones like insulin. In pancreatitis, these digestive enzymes get activated inside the pancreas instead of the intestine, leading to auto-digestion of pancreatic tissue, swelling, pain and sometimes severe systemic complications. He explained that the most common causes are gallstones and alcohol consumption. Gallstones block the pancreatic duct causing backflow and inflammation, and alcohol directly damages pancreatic cells. Other causes include very high triglycerides, hypercalcemia, abdominal trauma, viral infections, autoimmune pancreatitis and even certain medications like steroids, azathioprine, valproic acid etc., which can induce pancreatitis. Clinically the patient usually presents with severe upper abdominal pain radiating to the back, nausea, vomiting, abdominal distension and fever. Pain usually increases after meals, especially fatty food. In severe cases, complications like shock and organ failure can also develop. For diagnosis, he mentioned the main serum tests are Serum Amylase and Serum Lipase (Lipase being more specific). Ultrasound abdomen helps detect gallstones and swelling, and CT scan abdomen is important to assess severity and necrosis. Early identification, IV fluids, bowel rest (NPO), pain control and treating the cause are essential steps in management. #Pancreatitis #Inflammation #Gallstones #AlcoholInduced #SerumAmylase #SerumLipase #AbdominalPain #GastroMedicine #ClinicalLearning #MedicalEducation #DrAbhishekShukla #AasthaCares
