Wemedilla Reservoir: A Vital Water Resource in Sri Lanka’s Mahaweli Complex Welcome to our documentary on the #Wemedilla #Reservoir, one of the newest and most important #water management projects in Sri Lanka’s Mahaweli Complex. This vast reservoir, with a capacity of 5.6 million cubic meters, spans 92 hectares and plays a pivotal role in supporting #irrigation , agriculture , and local communities in the #Matale District. As a part of Sri Lanka's Mahaweli system, the Wemadilla Reservoir is central to the country’s water distribution strategy, ensuring a reliable supply of water for #agricultural lands across the region. The reservoir’s cultivated area stretches over an impressive 728 hectares, supporting a wide variety of crops and benefiting countless local farmers. The reservoir itself is surrounded by remarkable engineering, including a dam that measures 576 meters in length and rises 22.7 meters above the ground. Situated 222 meters above sea level, the top of the dam offers panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, showcasing the importance of this structure for the local ecosystem. The Wemadilla Reservoir is strategically located within the Galewela and Naula Divisional Secretariat Divisions of the Matale District. Visitors can access the reservoir via the Naula road, which branches south from the Puwakpitiya junction along the Matale-Dambulla A9 road. The road continues through Naula town, then branches toward Bibila-Nikula and the Galewela-Dambulla road, making it easily reachable for both locals and travellers. A key feature of the Wemadilla Reservoir is its system of three sluices, designed to manage the flow of water efficiently. The water flowing out of the first sluice is directed towards *Usaththawa, supporting irrigation and water supply needs in the surrounding agricultural areas. The second sluice channels water towards **Menikdena, Wallampitiya, and Ibbankatuwa Reservoir, creating a network of interconnected water systems that further enhance the reservoir's reach and functionality. The third sluice, still undergoing work, will eventually direct water through **Wayamba Ela*, further contributing to the water distribution network in the region. In this documentary, we explore the construction, functionality, and ongoing development of the Wemadilla Reservoir, highlighting its critical role in improving water management and irrigation for the Matale District. From its impressive dam to the intricate sluice systems, this project represents a modern approach to addressing Sri Lanka’s water resource challenges.
