What's the difference between ADV Bikes and Dual Sports? It can be confusing because both types of motorcycles share many common traits AND there are many examples of adventure motorcycles and dual sport motorcycles that straddle the line between the two. Use promo code "dorkintheroad" to save 10% (affiliate link) The first thing to keep in mind when talking ADV bike vs dual sport is this: "dual sport motorcycle" technically just means any bike that is both street legal and set up or designed to be ridden off the pavement. This means that TECHNICALLY an ADV motorcycle is a dual sport bike...but that's not how the terms are commonly used. ADV and dual sport differences, at least in the way the terms are used, can be boiled down to several important traits. Basically, an ADV bike is a street bike that can go off road and a dual sport is an off road motorcycle that is set up to be street legal. Examples of Adventure motorcycles include the BMW 1300GS, KTM 790 Adventure, and the Suzuki V-Strom 800. Dual sport examples include the Kawasaki KLX300, Suzuki DRZ400, and my beloved Honda CRF300L. Deciding between ADV and dual sport can be hard, but it really boils down to how much you plan on riding on the road and how much off road motorcycle riding you plan to do.
