So, you want to add social annotation to your course content? Let’s get started! Perusall is a third-party tool deep-linked to Canvas that allows you to host course content and enable social annotation. Most often, Perusall is used for group or individual annotation and reading response, including quizzes about the content, but it can also be used for peer review. Activities can be graded as Canvas assignments, or they can be ungraded. This how-to will cover graded Perusall assigments. First, you must enable Perusall in your Canvas course. To do this, go to Settings, then Navigation. Scroll down to find Perusall, and enable it in your Canvas course. Save your changes. A Perusall link will now be available in your course navigation. Before you can add assignments in Canvas, you need to add content to Perusall. Open Perusall. Click LIBRARY. Select ADD CONTENT. Browse your options—you can add a book students purchase; a document you upload; a Canvas page; a video, a webpage, and more. Let’s add a webpage, the URL for which you should have copied into your clipboard (CTRL/CMD-C). Now, in Perusall, navigate to the ASSIGNMENTS tab, rather than the LIBRARY tab. Click ADD ASSIGNMENT. We’re going to add a STANDARD ASSIGNMENT, which is for most typical annotation or commentary assignments where you provide the content and students annotate. Click Standard assignment. Give your assignment a name, something memorable and specific, like the short title of the essay or text. Give your assignment a submission deadline. Then, click NEXT STEP. In the popup window, go to CONTENT TO ASSIGN, and from the dropdown menu, select your content. Click NEXT STEP. Now, add instructions for students. After reading about them, change any other options you wish here. Click NEXT STEP. Finally, shape your scoring needs. This is a complicated page, so take a close look at it. Click specify custom scoring settings for this assignment to set the parameters for how Perusall should score student work; of course, you can always edit the grade. Set the assignment score range (default is 3pts). Consider the threshold option if you like. Look at the automatic scoring criteria. There are several presets, which you should explore. Let’s say I want to assess more than just comments; I’ll select the Holistic scoring option, which is the first selection. The default for this option is to award 60% of the total score for comments, 20% for opening the assignment, 20% for reading to the end, 10% for active engagement, 20% for getting responses to comments, 20% for upvoting, and 20% for quizzes. This obviously adds up to more than 100%, which means students can get full credit through multiple pathways. You want to be sure there is a clear pathway to 100%. Note the OPTIONS on each colored box. BE SURE TO EXAMINE THESE! Pull down the options for comment content and add the number of comments you want students to make. Note the details about what Perusall considers “full credit.” Make any changes you like. Explore each of the other colored box options, and adjust until you are finished. When you’re satisfied, click OK. Now that you’ve got the content and assignment into Perusall, you need to add the assignment in Canvas. This seems like a lot of work, and it can be, depending on how nuanced you get with the options. However, remember that you can reuse these assignments from Perusall in any future Canvas course! Go to your relevant module, and click the + to add an item. Select “External Tool.” Scroll down to Perusall and click it. This screen is a little confusing, so let’s explore. There are three possible ways to connect to Perusall: adding a link to your home page in Perusall—not recommended selecting a Perusall assignment (best for graded activities) or simply adding a Perusall content item—good for ungraded activities, but there are easier ways to do this if you aren’t assessing it; not recommended. Choose your assignment from the dropdown menu under ASSIGNMENTS, check the relevant options, and then click the LINK TO THIS ASSIGNMENT button. You’ll be taken back to the Canvas add external tool popup. Click ADD ITEM to add the item to Canvas. To grade these activities, you can use Canvas speed grader, which will link to Perusall. You can enter grades, adjust any automatic grading, and write comments to students. Well done! That's a short overview of using Perusall in Canvas. Thanks for watching!
