Today we talk about the era of Napoleon, the Duke of Wellington and the global struggle that we know as the Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars, and I am delighted to welcome Gareth Glover to the Channel. Over the last decades, Gareth has tracked down, edited and published an incredible list of otherwise lost or unknown primary sources for the period, in particular first hand accounts of the Peninsular War and Waterloo, expecially of the British army and its allies. Some of these have lain in family archives, some were circulated briefly for a few years and then forgotten. The sheer wealth and quality of this material is staggering and reminds us of the human element in these great events. In the conversation, we talk about what started him off on this path, his on-going work and how he approaches it. We also discuss what first hand accounts like this tell us about events, how reliable they are, how the perspective of the individual influences what they said, and also how the longer after events something was published, this could alter a man's view of something and how he chose to present it.
