As a journalist for ATV, then TVB for 5 years I covered events leading up to the handover and beyond between 1995-2000. On June 30th 1997 the date of Hong Kong's historic handover from British Colony to Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China I recorded the daylong coverage. Here for historians and researchers as well as friends and colleagues is how it looked and felt on that day. TVB ran continuous coverage. Here it is mistakes, warts and all. Part 1 features the fire in the kitchen of the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre--it wouldn't be a Hong Kong event if there wasn't some potential catastrophe associated with it. Then my advance coverage of Governor Patten's farewell--basically filler. A live shot from Tiananmen Square. Check out the people staring in wonderment at a reporter broadcasting live.
