Executions, Ravens, & Beefeaters? Discovering the Tower Green's History | Tower of London

Welcome to our tour of the Tower Green at the Tower of London! The Tower Green is just one corner of the Tower of London fortress but it's a hidden gem of London that's hidden in plain sight. Most people know this spot as the location of famous executions, such as Anne Boleyn's, but there's much more history packed into this area than most people realize. The half-timbered Tudor buildings here represent more than quintessential Medieval England architecture. Referred to as "The Queen's House," this section of the Tower of London was built for Queen Anne Boleyn by direction of her husband, King Henry VIII. Today, this is where some Yeoman Warders live but it was also were Anne Boleyn spent the final days of her life before she was beheaded for treason. In this Tower of London vlog, we'll share the history of the Yeoman Warders, who have been guarding and working at The Tower since Tudor times. They're also referred to as Beefeaters--a sarcastic nickname they eventually acquired. Beefeaters not only work at The Tower, and give guided tours, but many of them actually live here with their families! One of the more unique residents of the Tower of London are the ravens. Black ravens live at The Tower partly because of a paranoid and superstitious king. The ravens are said to keep the kingdom from ruin and are cared for by staff at the Tower of London. We got to see some ravens for ourselves, which was so cool to witness! Three former Queens of England were executed at the Tower Green: Anne Boleyn, Catherine Howard, and Lady Jane Gray. In this travel vlog, we'll share the tragic tales about each woman, explaining what led to their executions. Believe it or not, it was a privilege to be executed within the Tower Green as opposed to Tower Hill, where most prisoners of the Tower of London were killed. It's hard to fathom that such a pretty area of the fortress has such a dark history. We'll share with you the execution site where these women were killed, which now has a memorial to all of the people who were executed at the Tower Green. All three of those queens were buried at Chapel Royal of St. Peter ad Vincula, which is directly behind The Tower's scaffold site. Inside the church, you'll find where each queen was originally buried. There are actually several people who were buried here--about 1,000 bodies were once found underneath the church's floors! This chapel is a must-see while at The Tower, especially if you're there to learn about the executions that occurred there. Whenever you go to the Tower of London, be sure to see more than just the Crown Jewels and the White Tower!
