On the evening of Tuesday, March 3, Rev. Dr. Jeremiah A. Wright, Jr. will keynote a program in Shelton Auditorium at Christian Theological Seminary, called “Get Home Safely: 10 Rules of Survival.” As Senior Pastor of Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago, IL, where he served for 36 years, Dr. Wright combined his background in Sacred Black Music, ethnomusicology, African Diaspora studies, and Judeo-Christian thought to create more than 70 ministries to address the needs of the African American community and to enrich the lives and faith of his congregants. His participation in this early March program underscores the harsh and complex realities of race relations in America today, in the aftermath of recent police-related incidents of violence in Ferguson, MO, New York and throughout the country. The March 3 program, presented in conjunction with the Desmond Tutu Center for Peace, Reconciliation and Social Justice, will incorporate the short film “Get Home Safely: 10 Rules of Survival,” plus some brief companion films, to highlight the concepts being explored. Based on the important infographic "10 Rules Of Survival If Stopped By The Police” created by David Miller, founder of the Dare to be King Project, the films were created by The SALT Project, an Indianapolis-based not-for-profit initiative committed to creating beautiful and theologically interesting church media, in partnership with the Academy of Preaching and Celebration at CTS; WFYI of Indianapolis; and Trinity United Church of Christ of Chicago. SALT has taken Miller's rules and created a short film to bring this critical information to an even wider audience. “Our goal is to help save even more lives,” says Rev. Elizabeth Myer Boulton, President and Creative Director of The SALT Project. In addition to the films, Dr. Wright will speak for 40 minutes, and there will be brief, additional comments by Dr. Thomas, and Rev. Dr. Allan Boesak, a faculty member at CTS and Executive Director of the Desmond Tutu Center, followed by a 30-minute Question and Answer period.
