In 1955, General Motors unveiled the Euclid TC-12—a revolutionary twin-engine bulldozer with up to 454 horsepower designed to challenge Caterpillar's dominance. Featuring two Detroit Diesel 6-71 engines each driving one track independently, it was among the most powerful dozers in the world. Contractors loved its incredible power and maneuverability. But the twin-engine complexity, maintenance demands, smaller dealer network, and parts availability issues created problems. Nearly 1,000 units over 20 years wasn't enough. By 1974, simpler single-engine dozers could match its power without the complexity. This is the story of how GM's brilliant engineering almost dethroned Caterpillar—and why "good enough and simple" beat "more powerful but complex" in the construction equipment market. Technical superiority isn't always enough to win.
