The land, as always, demands blood. When the fuel runs low and the packs grow heavy, I turn for home. The mountain greets me like a memory — half-finished, half-dreamed. There’s work to be done. I lay the frame for a second garage, a passage for the truck, and shelter against the storms to come. But before the paint dries and the concrete cures, the horizon burns red. The blood moon rises early. The dead come in waves — screaming, clawing, endless — and I meet them on the ramparts, steel against flesh. Gunfire echoes through the valley; walls hold, then crack, then hold again. Between the thunder of explosions and the hiss of rain, I find myself praying for the sunrise. When dawn finally breaks, I brew black lung serum for journeys yet to come, tend the fields, and patch the walls. The fortress endures.
