Carved into the ancient lava cliffs of India’s Charanandri Hills, the temple took shape more than a thousand years ago as part of the Ellora Caves—one mile of thirty-four rock-cut sanctuaries spanning Hindu, Buddhist, and Jain traditions. The site is a study in religious coexistence. But Kailasa, also known as Cave 16, is something else entirely. It is a megalith: the largest structure in the world carved from a single piece of rock. Unlike most rock-cut temples, Kailasa was not excavated inward from a cliff face. Its builders began at the very top of the basalt plateau and carved downward, in a vertical excavation with no margin for error. Every cut had to keep the stone above supported.
