EmulationStation Crash Fix | How To Fix Arcade Button/Joystick Encoder Crashing EmulationStation

In this video I show you how how to get your arcade's joystick and button encoders working so they stop crashing emulationstation. Task Outline: Boot RetroPie/Raspberry Pi up with your arcade encoders disconnected. If you get a prompt saying that no controller is detected, plug in player 1's encoder. Open your configuration/options menu u and scroll down to and select RASPI-CONFIG. Connect your keyboard via a USB Port on your Raspberry Pi. Using the arrow keys scroll down to and select interfacing. Scroll down to and select SSH. Now it will ask if you would like the SSH server to be enabled. Select YES. You'll get an onscreen confirmation. Back out of the Raspi-config menu and out of the Retropie menu until you are back to the main screen where you started. From the Main screen on Retropie, hit F4 on you keyboard to open up your terminal. Type sudo nano /etc/ssh/sshd_config into the command line and hit enter on your keyboard. You are going to see a bunch a code. Using the arrow keys on you keyboard scroll down to the line that says: #PermitRootLogin prohibited (there will be an additional line in parenthesis following it) Delete the # and make the line read: PermitRootLogin yes Once done, hit CTRL X on your keyboard. Then press Y to save the changes and then hit Enter. It should now take you back to the command line again. Now we need to set a new password to you can access the root files when you log in to them. In the command line type: sudo passwd root then hit enter It will now ask for a password. You can choose whatever password you wan (just make sure you remember it) I used root as mine to keep it simple. WARNING: When you type the password it will not show up all, you may think its not working but it is. So type your chosen password and hit enter. Retype your same password when prompted to in the next line and then hit enter. You'll get a prompt saying password updated successfully. Now in the command line type: sudo reboot This is going to completely reboot your system. Once rebooted, go into your configuration/options page and select network options. Select What is my IP? from the menu and write down your IP Address. Back out to main page on Retropie. On your windows computer download WinSCP page http://winscp.net/eng/download.php Once downloaded open WINSCP and type your raspberry pies IP address into the host name line: Under user name type: root and hit enter. For password type in your chosen password and hit enter. Under the /boot/ directory look for the text file cmdline.txt and open it. At the very end of the text line add a space and type: usbhid.quirks=0x0079:0x0006:0x00000400 THE ENTIRE LINE should now read as follows, console=serial0,115200 console=tty1 root=PARTUUID=d9b3f436-02 rootfstype=ext4 elevator=deadline fsck.repair=yes rootwait plymouth.enable=0 quiet loglevel=3 logo.nologo consoleblank=0 usbhid.quirks=0x0079:0x0006:0x00000400) Hit save in the top left corner. Now go back to your Retropie and plug in your arcade joystick/button encoders and reboot the system from your main menu. Upon reboot, you should be able to fully boot into RetroPie without getting rerouted to your terminal or experiencing a emulationstation crash. If you have a multiplayer encoder setup, make sure all controls are mapped exactly the same on each encoder. You can further test this by jumping into a game. Fully let it it load in then hit your hotkey enable button and start to exit the game. If you go back to the game collection menu and no longer experience a emulationstation crash, then you are all set and have fully resolved this issue.
