Whole Foods profits selling certified humane raised, grass-fed, cage-free, free-range, organic meat, dairy and eggs. The people who buy those items feel better about themselves, because they believe behind those labels there are farmers growing happy and healthy animals. However, there is nothing further from the truth. Labels like these ones, are only part of marketing campaigns, there is no regulation neither fiscalization or enforcement of these estatements. Whole Foods even has an association with GAP (Global Animal Partnership) a step-based rating program used only by Whole Foods. They receive one of six ratings, from Step 1 to Step 5+. Step 1 permits industrial style (factory farm) confinement of animals and merely prohibits crates and cages. Feedlots are allowed for beef cattle through Step 4. Debeaking and tail docking are permitted through Step 3. Standards consider the treatment during transport, but not breeding or slaughter.
