Modern Fukuoka, ancient Hakata Bay Kyushu Island. The closest point of Japan to mainland Asia some 300 km away to South Korea. An ancient place where prehistoric migrations of people came into Japan and trade and convoy ships traveled across like to Tang Dynasty China. But in the late 1200s near this spot the divine wind, two timely typhoons saved Japan and Japanese culture here. The Mongol Empire specifically the Yuan Dynasty tried to conquer Japan twice, in 1274 and 1281. They already conquered Korea, so they launched an amphibious attack with a huge fleet from the peninsula near modern Busan South Korea (where I also have been in 2023), to land on the island of Kyushu at the modern city of Fukuoka. In both invasions, they attacked and took a few smaller islands. But a "kamikaze" saved Japan both times. Typhoons unexpectedly smashing right into the Mongol fleet, smashing their ships and drowning many of their soldiers. Samurais dispatched the rest of the soldiers that made it to shore. Kublai Khan had them invade again in 1281, a typhoon hitting for a second time, as the attack plan moved elsewhere. The Mongols never tried to invade again and Japan remained and to this day, never conquered or colonized. The origin of the word "kamikaze". One of my favorite stories of history and very cool to tell the story at the spot where it happened.
