Queensland – Cungulla Cungulla is a quiet, low-key coastal spot south of Townsville, defined by wide tidal flats, soft sand and a long, gently curving shoreline that opens directly to the Coral Sea. It feels remote despite being close to town, with plenty of space to spread out and a relaxed, almost exploratory vibe that suits riders who enjoy uncrowded sessions and reading the water as they go. The spot works best in E through ESE winds, which line up cleanly with the coast and build steadily when trade winds or local thermals are active. In these directions the wind is generally smooth and consistent, making it ideal for freeride cruising rather than aggressive wave riding. Lighter days are common, but when it fills in properly the bay comes alive with long, uninterrupted runs. On the water, Cungulla is all about sandbanks and tidal flow. Large flat sections form across the bay, broken up by channels that add variation and movement without creating chaos. It’s a forgiving environment that rewards riders who pay attention to tide and positioning, offering plenty of room to explore without feeling boxed in. Launching is straightforward off the open beach with ample rigging space and minimal obstacles. The main things to watch are tidal movement and shifting channels, which can subtly change the layout of the spot over a session. Take a moment to read the water before heading out, and Cungulla delivers a calm, spacious ride that feels worlds away from busier Queensland locations.
