Robert Butler first introduced the concept of documenting the life story of individuals with dementia in the early 1960's. Since that time, the importance of this topic has been of great interest to many, particularly those in dementia care. However, one has has to ask if the work related to documenting and sharing life stories has been put on a back burner. Are families and staff emphasizing the importance of knowing "Who" each person is today - and "Who" they were in the past? And are they putting important facts and photos into a document that can be used by those who these important memory supports? In dementia care, "All behaviour has meaning". When care partners know "Who" the person "is" and "was", it often becomes much easier to address needs and set individuals up for success. This Session will provide an overview of some of the key elements that are central to successful outcomes when creating and using a memory book - a book that holds facts and photos related to an individual's unique life story. A discussion about brain and behaviour, and the DementiAbility WOW model, will highlight the "how to's" of creating a book that will support memory, contribute to positive social connections and ultimately help with creating outcomes that are aimed at engaging the person with dementia with meaning, purpose, enhanced self-esteem, choice and joy.
