Healthy Retail Strategies Countering the Tobacco Industry’s Influence on Retailers

The tobacco industry invests heavily in providing financial and resource incentives to retailers to entice them to sell and advertise commercial tobacco products. While policies such as point-of-sale restrictions and retailer density limitations are effective in dissuading some retailers, in many jurisdictions these tools are unavailable. Healthy retail strategies are another set of tools that communities may have at their disposal. These strategies counter tobacco industry incentives by equipping retailers to move away from commercial tobacco sales that harm communities and towards a business model that benefits both the retailer and the community at large. This 75-minute Public Health Law Center webinar features three experts in the tobacco retail environment and healthy retail strategies. Presenters will describe tactics the industry uses to persuade retailers to market tobacco products and explore a range of effective countermeasures, such as providing retailers with evidence-based information on the economic and community-wide benefits of selling consumer products like fresh food.
