Earl Fuller, p, dir: Walter Kahn, c / poss. Harry Raderman, tb / Ted Lewis, cl / John Lucas, d Edison Recording Studios, Knickerbocker Building (16th St. and 5th Ave.) New York, NY ca. 4 June 1918 6199 “Jazbo Jazz (One-Step)” (Earl Fuller) Ed 50505 Transferred with 3.0ML lateral stylus via 3.0ML VM95SP cartridge and an Audiotechnica AT-LP120 Turntable. Declicked and given light EQ by Colin Hancock. Disc from Colin Hancock Collection. Discographical Information from Rust’s “Jazz Records,” DAHR, Mark Berresford, and Colin Hancock. Image from Ted Lewis Museum Much like the Original Dixieland Jazz Band, Earl Fuller’s Famous Jazz Band really got to stretch out on record when they weren’t canning for the Victor Talking Machine Co. The label’s focus on sales by whatever means possible meant a painful emphasis on novelty, much to the detriment of the band’s other capabilities. Take their hot performance of Fuller’s “Jazbo Jazz” on Edison. Even at that notoriously strict label, the Fuller band was able to stretch out and play a bit more freely than anything they did at Victor. Even Ted Lewis is in great form here, playing some of his most “legitimate” clarinet he ever recorded–not a diss by the way–the gaspipe stuff is definitely “legit” in its own way, I just mean here he isn’t centering his sound around novelty as much. We can appreciate musicians who do both. It’s certainly impressive to be able to do both!
