Research shows that depression among nursing homes residents is under-recognized and under-treated. According to the American Psychiatric Association, depression is a serious medical illness that "negatively affects the way a person thinks, feels and acts. Although depression is often thought of as a psychological or emotional reaction to stressful experiences, it may also affect a persons physical health as well. Caring for depressed residents requires sensitivity and an understanding of what they are experiencing. This program provides caregivers with an understanding of depression and its impact on the lives of elderly individuals. It also describes ways in which caregivers can assist residents who may be experiencing depression.
