I rode over 900 kilometers from Paraguay's capital, Asunción, on the Transchaco Highway in three days. The first two days were extremely hot, with temperatures reaching over 105°F. Along the route, there are only a few small towns with limited gas station options. I stayed for two nights along the way, and on the third day, I reached the Bolivian border. However, I was denied entry because they said I needed to obtain a visa from the embassy beforehand. This was frustrating, as the U.S. Embassy in Bolivia clearly states that U.S. citizens can get a visa upon arrival at the entry point. I had to return to Asunción the same day and visit the Bolivian embassy the next day. Unfortunately, there was only one staff member, and she didn’t speak a word of English. The visa requirements and timeline seemed unnecessarily complicated, almost as if they were discouraging tourists, particularly U.S. tourists. It was a very frustrating and upsetting experience. Considering Bolivia's struggling economy, it’s disappointing that they make tourism so difficult. I also noticed that the Bolivian officials I encountered were quite unfriendly.
