After years of research, advocacy and imagining, Australia has a new community refugee sponsorship program, which commenced in mid-2022. The Department of Home Affairs has partnered with Community Refugee Sponsorship Australia (CRSA) in the design and delivery of the Community Refugee Integration and Settlement Pilot (CRISP), which will support 1,500 refugees over four years. Under the CRISP, everyday Australians can provide practical support to a refugee household from 'day 1' of their settlement journey, for a 12 month period, by forming a group of five or more adults. CRSA screens, trains, monitors and supports community supporter groups, and matches them with refugees referred to Australia for resettlement by the UNHCR. Initial settlement support for refugees arriving in Australia is provided by the community supporter group, which replaces the support usually provided by the Humanitarian Settlement Program (HSP). They are however eligible for Settlement Engagement and Transition Support (SETS). CRSA welcomes the opportunity to share the program design and outcomes to date with SETS providers around Australia, with a view to working together to welcome and support the refugees arriving in Australia under this new settlement pathway.
