Lillian Leitzel - - 2015 World Acrobatics Society Legend (Professional Acrobatics). Lillian Leitzel is considered by circus experts to be the greatest individual female performer of all time. Born January 2, 1891, and at the age of 13, performed on the single trapeze with her mother and aunts in an act called the “Leamy Ladies.” Later, as an individual performer, she performed a two-part act. First, she would climb to her steel rings using a unique back pull-over-and-turn onto her back technique. After performing her ring act, she would descend only to ascend again on a rope sticking her hand through a loop to a chained swivel handle. She would then proceed to execute 100 “planges” each performance in a frenzied manor to the William Tell Overture. Lillian worked with no net beneath her. She fell to her death when the chain swivel handle broke during her one-arm swings and died two days later on February 15, 1931. The mission of the World Acrobatics Society is to advance the education, communication and cooperation among all individuals and organizations interested in fostering the growth, development and safety of the various acrobatic disciplines along with preserving their histories. The World Acrobatics Society is a not for profit foundation. Corporate and individual contributions to WAS are 501(c)3 deductible. www.worldacro.com
