Johanneburg🇿🇦 to London🇬🇧 to New York🇺🇸 to Buffalo🇺🇸✈: 9-10 April 2002 Speedbird #BA56 B747-436 (G-CIVR) sporting "Waves and Cranes" ethnic tail livery boarding at Gate 23 Terminal A. Flight time: 11 hours Checked in at British Airways counter, went through immigration and security and headed to the gate at ground level where we were ferried by a shuttle bus parked alongside Alpha apron to our plane parked at a remote stand next to a later flight to London, B747-436 (G-BNLL) sporting “Chelsea Rose” tail livery scrapped in 2015 after its right wing struck a building on departure from Johannesburg in 2013. Our plane's auxiliary power unit (APU) was running as we stepped down on the tarmac and boarded. After a warm welcome by the crew, i hiked through Club World to Row 44A window seat in WT economy. The seatback IFE screen had been switched on before the safety video came on. After push-back, we were taxiing out on Bravo to Cat 2 holding point for Rwy 03L. Positioned for takeoff, the 4 Rolls-Royce RB211-524G engines roared into life as we rolled away and were airborne into the night sky. Once we reached cruising altitude, the IFE came back to life and i watched “Captain Corelli’s Mandolin” as the crew began serving drinks and taking dinner orders. I chose Chicken curry with rice, a bread roll and orange juice. I watched one movie after before catching some sleep. An hour before landing traditional English Breakfast was served; with our plane on descent, the cabin was cleared for arrival as we burst through the clouds on our final approach to Heathrow from the west over Wraysbury Reservoir and early morning traffic on M25 and Stanwell Moor Road as we touched down on Rwy 9R and taxied to a remote stand next to B767-300ER (G-BNWI). We deplaned through Club World, disembarking once again to the awesome sound of the auxiliary power unit as we waited for shuttle buses to ferry us to T4. G-CIVR delivered to British Airways in 1998, withdrawn from service in 2020 and stored at Teruel/Spain in 2020 where she is permanently retired*😢💔 Having already secured my boarding pass to New York when i checked-in in Johannesburg, i followed the “Flight Connections” signs to my flight, recleared security and proceeded to the airside departures lounge to check my gate number and departure time on the information screens. London/Heathrow to New York/JFK: 10.4.2002 Speedbird #BA117 B747-436 (G-BNLV) sporting ‘Waves of the City’ ethnic tail livery (just love it, but not every Brit’s cup of tea) boarding at Gate 19. Flight time: 9hrs 25min Always a joy to see the Concorde docked at T4 as i headed to the gate to board. After being welcomed by the crew, i proceeded through Club World to Row 48K window seat. Push-back onto Tango was on schedule as we taxied along Sierra to holding point S11 for Rwy 9R. With the 4 Rolls-Royce engines powered up to "Engines stabilised" point, and then all the way forward to "TO1" take-off power thrust, the brakes were released as we rolled down and began the rotation opposite BA Cargo terminal and airborne past T4,and over Great South West Road before turning right and northwest. Within minutes we were over Ireland and the Atlantic reaching cruising altitude when the crew came around serving traditional English breakfast as i watched ‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone’. Afternoon tea was served an hour before landing, and i chose chicken salad sandwich. With our plane on descent, we burst through the clouds over Maine, Massachusetts and Long Island on our final approach to JFK. We touched down on Rwy 22 and taxied to Terminal 7, deplaned through Club World and i had a quick peep in ‘First’ before heading to Customs and Border Protection Processing Area checkpoint and baggage claim. Excellent service from BA as always. G-BNLV delivered to British Airways in 1992, withdrawn from service in 2009 and stored at Victorville/California till July 2010, returned to service in Dec 2010, withdrawn from service in 2016, stored at Teruel/Spain and scrapped in 2017*😢💔 New York/JFK to Buffalo/Niagara: 10.4.2002 Jetblue #JBU2902 A320-200 (N519JB) boarding at Gate 18 T6 . Flight time: 1hrs 35min A shuttle bus dropped me at Jetblue Departures, checked in, went through security and boarded a brand new A320 with a huge legroom, seatback screens and full onboard IFE with movies that was great for a short flight. After push-back, we taxied to Rwy 31L for takeoff and on the way spotted Northwest #queenoftheskies as we lined up. Within minutes we were airborne, the skyline of Manhattan and Empire State Building visible in the distance as we headed north. After the "seat belt signs" went out, we were offered drinks and snacks. Not long after we were on descent landing on Rwy 14 and taxiing to Gate 7. I proceeded to baggage claim and took a shuttle downtown to Adam's Mark Hotel @120 Church Street for the 71st annual meeting of American Association of Physical Anthropologists (AAPA).
