Phillip Sear plays a fun gavotte from 1919 by the American violinist, pianist, and composer Leo Oehmler (1867–1930). ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Leo Oehmler was born in Pittsburgh, and studied there and then (as was customary) in Germany. He returned to Pittsburgh in 1891 as a teacher and performer, and his students there included Charles Wakefield Cadman. In 1907, he relocated to Pasadena, California. He apparently published over 300 violin pieces. Lighter music titles from the period often focus on elves, fairies, and elements of nature, indicating a public taste for escapism and gentle whimsy in music, especially after the hardships of World War I. This piece was dedicated to W. K. Steiner (1874–1945), a significant figure in the musical life of Pittsburgh, known as a pianist, organist, and composer. He studied piano with Fidelis Zitterbart, a noted Pittsburgh musician and teacher. Steiner held a prominent position as organist for many important events and venues in the city, including Carnegie Music Hall.
