Dorothy and the Spirit of Orienteering What is Orienteering? Orienteering is an exciting, inclusive outdoor adventure sport that combines navigation and physical activity. Participants use a map and compass to find checkpoints across a course—whether in a park, forest, or urban space. It’s a sport where strategy, movement, and problem-solving meet, and anyone can participate at their own pace. At the heart of Edmonton’s orienteering community is Dorothy, a passionate leader, tireless volunteer, and champion of inclusion. For over ten years, Dorothy has shaped the local landscape of orienteering through her work with the Edmonton Overlanders Orienteering Club (EOOC). Her ability to connect with people of all ages, remove barriers to participation, and build relationships across clubs and communities makes her a true community hero. Each year, Dorothy introduces nearly 12,000 children to the sport of orienteering through school programs and youth activities, serving as the sole coach and instructor for EOOC. But her reach extends far beyond numbers—her efforts are rooted in a commitment to accessibility and innovation. This year, she partnered with Special Olympics Alberta, creating dedicated events for athletes with intellectual disabilities. When one student with a visual impairment expressed interest, Dorothy designed an entire customized orienteering system—complete with specialized tactile maps and sound cues—ensuring they could navigate and succeed independently. Dorothy is a tireless volunteer beyond orienteering, leading support stations at the Edmonton Birkebeiner Ski Festival, sharing equipment with local running events, and organizing volunteer crews whenever a need arises. Her generosity and leadership continue to strengthen bonds across Edmonton’s outdoor sport community. Thank you, Dorothy, for leading with heart, making sport welcoming for all, and inspiring the next generation of community champions. 🧭💛 Learn more and get involved at: www.orienteer.ab.ca
