In the early 18th century BC, Shamshi-Adad I forged the Kingdom of Upper Mesopotamia, establishing himself as one of the most powerful rulers of the Ancient Near East. But while he was a brilliant conqueror, he was also a demanding, critical, and often brutal father. In this video, we dig into the Archives of Mari to uncover the personal letters between Shamshi-Adad and his two sons: the capable but distant Ishme-Dagan, and the "soft," disappointment of a son, Yasmah-Addu. These tablets reveal a timeless story of family dysfunction, sibling rivalry, and a son’s desperate plea for approval. We’ll look at the famous correspondence where Shamshi-Adad asks, "Are you a child, not a man?" and the unique, emotional letter where Yasmah-Addu quotes his father's insults back to him, addressing the Emperor simply as "Daddy" (Adda). It is a rare and humanizing look at the people behind the history.
