Here's why Heng's Vortex II may be the best choice to upgrade your RV's vent fan and what's involved in a typical installation. Many RV ceiling vents come with a comically small, poorly-performing fan. Numerous upgrade options exist, but most of those require removal of the existing roof vent, with the need to disturb the roof lining and reseal the new vent. While it can't match the airflow ratings of complete replacements, Heng's less expensive Vortex II fits the roof vent that's there already, while providing appreciably better airflow than the stock fan. Or does it? We test that out, but don't worry - no science was harmed in the process! UPDATE, 2025: My hopes that this fan would quiet down with use proved unfounded - if anything, it's slightly louder now that it has some seasons of use behind it. Some commenters have suggested lubrication, however that made no appreciable difference. Still, two things remain true: it moves more air than the joke of a fan that my trailer had (and most others seem to come with), and my roof liner remains undisturbed and leak free. In our trailer, if it's so hot that we'd need this fan running at anything over low speed, we'd typically turn on the roof air, which frankly is far louder (but worth the noise). The Heng's will ventilate out a humid or fragrant bathroom quite quickly on high, and it can be left on to pull in cooler air on temperate days, so it still has value. If it ever dies, or my roof liner is ever being repaired for something else, I'll be putting in a premium replacement. Until then, it remains a worthwhile purchase.
