Puran Kumar (also referred to as YS Puran Kumar or Y Pooran Kumar), a 52-year-old 2001-batch IPS officer of the Haryana cadre and Additional Director General of Police (ADGP), allegedly died by suicide at his official residence in Sector 11, Chandigarh. He reportedly shot himself with his service revolver in the basement of the house, specifically in a soundproof home theatre room. His daughter discovered the body around 1:30 PM, and Chandigarh Police responded promptly, recovering the weapon, a will, and an eight-to-nine-page suicide note. Kumar, originally from Andhra Pradesh and an engineering graduate, was on leave following a recent transfer and had a reputation as a disciplined officer who frequently advocated for transparency, seniority rights, and against administrative irregularities in the Haryana Police.The incident has sparked widespread outrage, particularly among Dalit communities and opposition parties, who view it as a manifestation of caste-based discrimination and systemic harassment within the police hierarchy. Kumar belonged to the Scheduled Caste (SC) community, and his death has been described as a "horrifying testimony to social injustice" by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge.
