(6 Apr 1997) T/I 10:24:42 The citizens of the city of Fengdu, on the banks of China's Yangtze river, are having to prepare for the loss of their homes as the prospect of the town becoming a modern-day Atlantis draws nearer. The people of Fengdu have long grown accustomed to the vagaries of the river, with gauges on the sides of shops and houses to mark the levels of past floods. But the new threat is more implacable: the building of the Three Gorges Dam, which will innundate the city.
