The Church of St. Mary of Zion in Axum is one of Ethiopia's most important religious sites, but its history has had its ups and downs, especially during the time of Queen Judith. Queen Judith, also known as Gudit or Yodit, was a powerful ruler in the 10th century who led attacks against the Axumite Empire. Her forces are said to have destroyed many Christian sites, including the original Church of St. Mary of Zion. Historians still debate why Queen Judith did this. Some believe she was seeking revenge for the mistreatment of her people, while others think she wanted to take power from the Axumite rulers.
