RUSHCLIFFE PARISH #39: CROPWELL BUTLER Cropwell Butler – “Butler’s Land near a Rounded Hill” Hello again folks, and welcome to the first of a pair of twins. We’re used to the idea by now of two villages sharing the same name. There’s usually a theme that links them together - and here in the Cropwell’s that’s certainly the case. Cropwell means rounded hill – and between the two Cropwell villages, there is indeed a rounded hill. Hey presto! The mound is known as Hoe Hill, and it can clearly be seen from both. It used to offer some great views from the top of what was a rocky outcrop once upon a time but now, its covered in trees. The hill is though, the only thing that links the Cropwell villages together. Cropwell Butler is much more associated with the tiny village of Tithby than it is with Cropwell Bishop. The reason for that is all down to the lack of a church here. Cropwell Butler used to have a church but it was pulled down in 1660. Since then, the main religious building has been in Tithby, although there is still an active Methodist church here. Cropwell Butler is often seen as an upmarket, posh kind of village – and that’s true to an extent. Not all of it is. Yes it has some grand houses and fabulous features, but its residents aren’t all high and mighty. It has won many Best Kept Village competitions in the past though – and rightly so too.
