The *Apprentice Boys of Derry* are a Protestant fraternal society based in Derry/Londonderry, Northern Ireland. They commemorate the *Siege of Derry (1688–1689)* — one of the key events in the *Williamite War in Ireland* — when Protestant defenders held the city against the forces of the Catholic King James II. ⚔️ *Origins: The Siege of Derry (1688–1689)* In December *1688**, when the Catholic army of King James II approached Derry, **13 apprentice boys* from the city famously *shut the gates* against them. This act of defiance began the **Siege of Derry**, which lasted **105 days**. Under leaders like *Colonel Adam Murray* and **Colonel John Mitchelburne**, the city’s defenders resisted until the siege was lifted on **July 28, 1689**, when relief ships broke through a boom across the River Foyle. The rallying cry *“No Surrender!”* comes from this event. 🏛️ *The Apprentice Boys Association* Formally established in the **early 18th century**, it celebrates the courage and faith of the city’s defenders. There are *two main commemorations* each year: 1. *The Shutting of the Gates* – around **December 18**, marking the apprentices’ act. 2. *The Relief of Derry* – held on the **second Saturday in August**, marking the end of the siege. --- 🎺 *Traditions and Culture* The celebrations include **parades**, **wreath-laying ceremonies**, and **the burning of effigies or bonfires**. The *Apprentice Boys Memorial Hall* in Derry serves as the society’s headquarters. The group is divided into multiple *clubs or branches* across Northern Ireland and beyond (including Scotland and Canada).
