As the Madlanga Commission prepares for its first public hearing of 2026 alarming details have emerged about ongoing criminal impersonation of the Commission’s chairperson, Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga. It is against this backdrop that officials have issued a strong public warning. The Judicial Commission of Inquiry has confirmed that multiple individuals are impersonating Justice Madlanga, using his photos and posing as him in communications that target private citizens, government officials, MPs, lawyers and police officers. Anyone found guilty of impersonating or interfering with the chairperson or commissioners faces a fine or up to six months’ imprisonment. The Commission warns that the cases reported may only be a fraction of the true scale, as many victims, particularly those who do not personally know Justice Madlanga, may never have reported the incidents.
