Trinidad All Stars - July 02, 2022 - Anthony’s Cari-Jazz Artiste of the Day The Massy Trinidad All Stars has been a significant ‘tour de force’ in the steelband world for over eighty-five years of their ‘watch words’ Discipline, Dedication and Magnificence. In 1935, the band was known as “Hell Yard Boys” named after the poverty-stricken area on the banks of the East Dry River in Port of Spain. This name changed several times to Second Fiddle, Cross of Lorraine and finally All Stars, chosen because of the perceived superior ability of their players. By 1946, the word Trinidad was added to the name. The band is credited with a number of steelband innovations through its first captain, Prince Batson, and pan innovator, Neville Jules. These include the introduction of classical music on pan – played to Calypso rhythm and known as the Bomb, the quarto or alto pan, now called the double second, the bass pans and the use of two sticks. Trinidad All Stars has been the recipient of the “Hummingbird Medal – Gold” National Award for its contribution to the Pan Movement in 1982. In 1986, the Port of Spain City Corporation gave a special award to the band. To date, the band has won the Panorama (Calypso) Competition ten (10) times, Bomb Competition (Classical piece to calypso rhythm) five (5) times and Steelband Music Festival (Classical music played as per score) six (6) times – a feat that is envied by many. With countless worldwide tours and in an effort to present this band today, we list a few of their additional accomplishments in point form: The oldest pan entity going back to 1935. They adopted the name All Stars in 1946. Having entered the most classical competitions, they always placed in the top-three and has the most wins with 6. The years are 1968, 1972, 1980, 1984, 1994 and 1996. They entered their first Panorama in 1965 and became the only steel orchestra to play at position #1 and win. {Remember there was only one category at Panorama 1973.} They were the first to place in the top three for 7 consecutive years – 1980 through 1986. It may have been 8 straight if the band did not perform for 10 minutes and 40 seconds in 1987. {just some humour guys} They scored the highest marks in the history of panorama, 293 out of 300 which is 97.67%. They received the longest audience ovation in the history of any pan competition. The broke the Desperadoes Steel Orchestra’s 37-year-old record for the most placements in the top-three in 2013 at 22. They now lead this category with 28 – (10) 1st, (11) 2nd and (7) 3rd placings. In another category, the Trinidad All Stars have, on 5 occasions, hindered/stopped other bands from achieving a 3-peat. The bands in question are Harmonites in 1973, Renegades in 1986, Phase II in 2007, Silver Stars in 2011 and Phase II again in 2015. They Has grossed the most panorama prize monies from 2000 through 2020. They are the only steelband to win Carnival Band of the Year back-to-back. To list some other firsts: They won two competitions in the same year – 1980 Won both the one million & two million first prize Won the first large panorama finals that was not held in Port of Spain – 2007 Won the only International Panorama – 2015 Defeated Silver Stars with their ‘own tune’ in 2008 and 2011. All Stars has performed 26 different artistes tunes at panorama, which is more than any other steel orchestra. Kudos to All Stars for now having an address that bears the Name of Mr. Neville Jules. No more ## Duke Street. Encapsuled by Ian Franklin, a well renowned and respected Trinbagonian historian, culturist, and pan enthusiast. Ian has published several books, all of which are focused on the history and culture of Trinidad and Tobago.
