I bought plans from CGE for a roll off roof observatory last year and hired two contractors to build it for me. The plans called for a handle to be installed on the roof to open and close it. Well, that roof weighs a lot and I can barely reach the roof. So, there was no way I could open and close the roof with a handle. So, the contractors installed two hose reels with cables to open and close the roof. It worked for a while but it got harder and harder to open and close it and I was ready to install an electronic gate opener to replace the hose reels but it never came and the contractor disappeared and so instead my brother came up with an idea to install a boat winch to open the roof. He and another brother flew out to Montana and installed a boat winch to open the roof and it is a vast improvement over the hose reel method. I plan to install a second boat winch to close the roof. If you are having trouble opening and closing your roll off roof observatory and don't want the hassle of electronics that may fail, then I recommend you look into installing boat winches. You can buy electronic boat winches also but I used hand cranked boat winches on my roll off roof observatory.
