Hear from EWG experts about Paraquat, a toxic weed killer, which is closely linked to Parkinson’s Disease. While more than 60 countries have banned Paraquat, millions of pounds of this dangerous chemical are still being sprayed in the US annually, posing serious threats to agricultural workers and nearby communities. Researchers found people who sprayed paraquat were more than twice as likely to develop Parkinson’s disease than those who applied other pesticides. Exposure to paraquat is also associated with types of cancers and ingesting even tiny amounts can be lethal. Despite being aware of these risks for years, Syngenta, a Swiss-based company owned by a Chinese state enterprise, chose to conceal crucial information from both the public and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). However, there is hope. It's entirely feasible to cultivate crops without resorting to this deadly herbicide. Join us as we urge state authorities, the EPA, and Congress to take decisive action to safeguard both consumers and workers from the perils of Paraquat. Together, we can make a difference.
