In this video we will tell you more about the important roles women played in the greatest conflict in human history. The Soviet Union was the only nation that sent women to the front to fight in WWII. It’s estimated that eight hundred thousand women served in the Red Army throughout the war. Though there is much to say about the negative aspects of Soviet communism, one positive was the possibilities open to women. Women had played a central role in the communists’ coming to power in what became the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. In St. Petersburg, the capital of the Russian Empire that the communists overthrew, women were among the first to take to the streets. They demonstrated against WWI for more and cheaper food and destroying the Tsarist system, which had limited how far most people in Russia could rise – which was not far.
