VHS quality rip of my Sonic CD (1993) Play through on the Sega Mega CD. This video is not analog horror. Sonic CD holds a special place in my heart. It's my favorite Sonic game for a multitude of reasons. The 2011 re-release of Sonic CD by Christian Whitehead (Taxman) and especially the decomp released back in 2021 which spawned some amazing mods have sort of made the Sega Mega CD version of the game a little bit obsolete. Despite that though, there's always something special about playing the original version of the game, and the original version does have something special to it. Even though it's charming, the original version does have plenty of issues such as janky collision issues (which you'll see a few amount of times that either kill my time travel or get me killed). The time traveling is also a little bit too unforgiving for my liking, which the game being in 4:3 doesn't really help at all that much, and the Special Stages in this game are some of the worst utilization of scaling on the Sega Mega CD Hardware, if not THE worst. There are a couple of things the game does have over the 2011 remaster, such as the special stages being way easier to control, being better for speedrunners, but generally you're better off playing the 2011 re-release OR playing a mod like Sonic CD: Miracle Edition which makes the game way more casual playthrough friendly. My gameplay here was not my best showing, as you can tell by the two embarrassing deaths I had during the Tidal Tempest & Wacky Workbench bosses, and me failing to time travel back to the past in Quartz Quadrant. My goal wasn't to get all of the robot generators but to get all the ones before I got all the time stones (which I never really go for BTW, I'm usually more of a robot generator ending kind of guy). This video was not actually recorded or taped on a VHS player or a VHS cassette. This was carefully made using the ntscQT program to faithfully recreate any VHS effect better than what you could get on an editing program. The audio was tinkered on Audacity multiple times to get the VHS audio sounding right but also not being super annoying or painful on anyone's ears. The gameplay itself was recorded VIA RetroArch's Genesis Plus GX core. The rendering of the gameplay footage took over 2 days to fully render, as each frame was individually tinkered by the software in order to maintain accuracy. This was more of an experiment more than anything and I'm not sure if I wanna put my computer through nearly 3 days of rendering footage of a game from a failed addon. Super keen eyes might notice there's a slight desync on audio and video around when the game gets to Stardust Speedway. I don't really know what's causing it (probably a rendering issue), but I couldn't really figure out how to smoothly fix this issue. Apologies if this bothers you a bit. Like I said, this was more of an experiment more than anything else.
