Sizewell C and Access Community Trust have worked together since 2020, and this video marks one year of support at Access Community Trust's Sam's Wellbeing Hub + Cafe in Lowestoft. Sizewell C has stated its ambition to secure at least a third of its workforce from the local area, with a commitment to 500 jobs for Lowestoft and 500 for people from ‘hard to reach’ groups. To achieve this, it is important that the pool of available resources is as broad as possible. In addition to targeting ‘job-ready’ individuals, Sizewell C is working with education and outreach partners to expand the talent pool. Outreach partners can help Sizewell reach the typically ‘hard-to-reach’ sections of society and highlight Sizewell C as an opportunity for them. Outreach partners can reduce the barriers people face and prepare them to be economically active. Sizewell C can achieve its ambitions and create lasting social value in Suffolk. Access Community Trust are one of Sizewell C’s ‘Social Partners’. Access Community Trust support people who may be homeless, vulnerable and those who are socially isolated. They believe that everyone, regardless of their background or circumstances, is entitled to live in a decent home, enjoy positive and rewarding relationships with others, engage in meaningful activities, and achieve their full potential. Their services support everyone, and their goal is to help people to achieve lifelong independence. Access Community Trust runs community-focused social enterprise cafes that serve as places to relax and enjoy food and drink, as well as hubs for community events and signposting to support services. They are a safe space for service and intervention facilities provided by the Access Community Trust team. When Sam’s Café on Beaven Street was forced to close due to a lack of funding, the local area lost more than just a coffee shop; it lost a safe, welcoming space that provided vital support to the community. To help bring it back, Sizewell C contributed £100,000 to reopen the café for at least two years. The café reopened its doors in September 2024 and has already made a real difference, supporting over 300 people facing challenges ranging from financial hardship and unemployment to mental health struggles. It now offers a warm, informal space where people can connect with essential services in a safe and friendly environment. To build on this support, we also launched a monthly Jobs Service drop-in session at the café, offering advice, information, and guidance on employment—including opportunities linked to Sizewell C. As the development progresses, we expect many of our future team members to come from Lowestoft, and we are proud to be investing in the community from the very start.
