For a long time, it was unusual to see a double-decker on this route, but now they are commonplace, which is great because the ride, which skirts the Chilterns, is one of the most scenic in the region. Filmed on Friday 3rd October, one of the last really fine days of 2014, we go from Tring to Luton, and for anybody who has the stamina there are highlights of the journey back again. I didn't bother filming the boring bit, between Tring and Aylesbury. The 61 goes through four different local authority areas - imagine the concessionary fare calculations on that! These end-of-life DAF double-deckers are quite lively, and the suspension deals adequately with the lousy road surfaces of four different highway authorities, although the bodywork is showing its age - the first one I rode had an extra ventilation hole that wasn't factory fitted! Postscript: I now have it on good authority that the route number changed from 16 to 61 on 24th March 1963. This change was tied up with a general move to abolish all letter suffixes in the Luton area.
