Overpower the Sun with Flash | Take and Make Great Photography with Gavin Hoey

There are two approaches to mixing flash with ambient light on location. The first approach is fill flash, which, when done well, can look like you haven’t used flash at all. The other option is overpowering the sun, and it’s a style that’s shamelessly bold, bright, and brash, with a flash. Overpowering the sun all starts by deliberately underexposing the ambient light so that’s where photographer Gavin Hoey begins. Once he has the best camera settings for taking photos on location dialed in, Gavin sets about adding the flash. As Gavin demonstrates, how much light you need to overpower the sun changes with distance. Getting his Flashpoint XPLOR400 close to the model gives Gavin more light but places the light stand in the frame. Gavin also demonstrates how changing the aperture can create an amazing starburst effect from the sun. Finally, Gavin goes into Photoshop to demonstrate two techniques to remove anything from your photos. The first makes use of "clean plate" images taken during the photo session.
