When Nigerians talk about their founding fathers, they usually refer to Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, Sir Ahmadu Bello, and Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa. Whereas modern Nigeria existed before these four were born. In fact, as of the time the Southern and Northern Protectorates of Nigeria were amalgamated in 1914, to become the British Colony of Nigeria, Azikiwe was nine years old, Awolowo and Bello were four years old while Balewa was merely an infant at one year old. So, why were these men referred to as the founding fathers of Nigeria? Are they really founding fathers in the first place?
