African night sounds

Listen to the sounds of the African wilderness as night falls. The Pel's fishing owls that live in this swampy savannah have been hiding from the heat all day. Now that the sun has set they are ready to go hunting. They leave their juvenile offspring at the nest while they fly off into the night looking for food. There is another owl nearby, an African wood owl. This individual has decided to call for a while before heading out. In the background there is a thick insect chorus, and the occasional series of hippo grunts. A lone hyena calls in the distance but gives up quickly. Occasionally elephants can also be heard in the distance. The sounds of movement in the water help ground the soundscape and give a sense of scale. At regular intervals there is an eerie descending call, a wailing cry that carries for a long distance. This is the juvenile Pel's fishing owl calling its parents to let them know it is hungry. I'm sure the parents are aware of this, but the regular cries probably make the young owl feel better about itself. There's not much to do in the savanna at night if you're inexperienced, even for a large bird of prey like this owl. Recorded with Sony PCM A10 and Lom mikroUsi in South Luangwa.
