#Belpahari,#KanakDurgaTemple,#Chilkigarh,#KhandaraniDam,#Jhargram This weekend our journey was Kolkata to Belpahari (Garrasini Hills) via Chilkigarh Kanak Durga Temple & Raj Palace near Jhargram and finally Khandarani Dam. On August 20, 2021 we started early morning and our fifth member joined us from Kharagpur. From Lodhashuli we took a right turn towards Jhargram and entered the refreshing greenery of forest roads. Just before entering Jhargram town took a left turn towards Jambani. Chilkigarh is generally known as a village in Jamboni CD Block in Jhargram district. It is located around 14km away from Jhargram. Kanakdurga temple of Chilkigarh is the main atraction of Jhargram district. The temple is coverd in the west by a dence forest,in the east by Dulung river,it flows between raj palace of Chilkigarh and Kanakdurga temple. The forest is covered with medicinal plant of 433 types. From Bihar and Jharkhand Jambani may be called 'Gateway of Bengal'. In Chilkigarh there grows a mixed culture of Bengal, Jharkhand and Orissa. The history of Chilkigarh connected with the history of Dhalbhum. The main history of Kanakdurga temple revolved round a dream. Devi Mahamaya came in the dream and orderd king Gopinath to setup a temple for her and she also described her idol. On the next morning King Gopinath found two visitors who saw the same dream at night. It was artist Jogendranath Kamiliya who transformed the dream into reality and Bramhin Ramenhandra Sarangi. Some says that Devi Kanakdsurga is Devi Chandi, She also the goddess of Power and energy. At distance of 12 Kms from Jhargram and 1km from Kanak Durga Temple is Chilkigarh Raj Palace. It is a historical place. Along with three old temples (Radha-Krishna, Gayatri & Shiva) one can see remains of long wall around the palace to protect it from Borgi invasion. However, the maintenance of the place is poor and common people don’t have permission to go inside the main palace since descendants of the royal family still live there. From Chilkigarh we took the road via Gidhni, Parihati and finally turned right towards Belpahari, while the straight road went to Jharkhand. From here as we closed in to our destination the road grew more and more scenic with frequent undulating lines of hills along the open horizon. Belpahari is a prominent town and gradually becoming a popular tourist destination leaving behind its infamous past. Right after crossing main town we found a narrow road to our left filled with picturesque view, which finally led us to ‘Pabitra Home Stay’ at the foothills of Garrasini hill at ‘Aguibil’. Nothing is comparable with the food and hospitality we received at this basic homestay. Don’t expect any extravaganza, but if you are looking to spend some quite time close to nature being in company with some simple minded folks, this is the place. After having a pre-ordered lunch (quality & quantity is unparalleled) we paid a leisurely visit to the nearby Khandarani Dam. Snuggled in the lap of pristine nature, Khandarani Dam is the place where myriad-faceted nature comes in its fullest magnificence. Here the lake meets with captivating forests as well as hills. The multi-coloured migratory birds spend their winter here. As the day light dimmed we came back to our home stay and enjoyed the quite serene evening below the half-cloudy moonlit sky.
