It was 11 years in the making and we finally got to experience the magical Chiang Mai Lantern Festival again and this time with our two daughters! 🏮✨ The Yi Peng and Loy Krathong festivals did not disappoint - thousands of lanterns lighting up the night sky, beautiful krathongs floating down the river, and memories we'll cherish forever. IN THIS VIDEO: 🎊 Loy Krathong & Yi Peng Festival parade through Chiang Mai 🏮 Releasing sky lanterns and making wishes as a family 🌊 Floating our krathong down the river 👨👩👧👧 Experiencing this bucket list moment with our girls 🎆 The chaos, crowds, and magic of Thailand's most beautiful festival WARNING: It was crowded and loud so if your kids are sensitive noises or overwhelmed in crowds make sure to choose the less crowded areas to celebrate. This video shows the most popular places to celebrate both these traditional festivals but there are so many other options. Find a facebook group or just some google research. We definitely will next time! WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW: 📅 When: Yi Peng and Loy Krathong happen in November (dates change yearly based on lunar calendar) 📍 Where: Chiang Mai, Thailand 💰 Cost: Free to participate in public celebrations ⏰ Best Time: Arrive early evening for parade, lanterns released after dark TRAVEL TIPS: -Book accommodation MONTHS in advance - Chiang Mai fills up fast -Bring cash for buying lanterns and krathongs -Arrive early to secure a good spot along the river -Be prepared for huge crowds, especially near the Old City -Consider earplugs for young kids (fireworks and noise) -Dress modestly and respectfully (it's a Buddhist ceremony) WHY 11 YEARS? I was in Chiang Mai with a friend 11 years ago, teaching. We celebrated the lantern festival together and I have been dreaming about going back ever since. I finally got to come back and with my husband and kids, which couldn't have been more perfect! The lantern release rules changed which was understandable but a little disappointing; meaning you can’t release them in the old city anymore. And the festival has definitely gained the attention of world travelers as it was so much more crowded this time around. Still, I am so glad we got to experience the whole event as a family. SAFETY NOTE: While beautiful, releasing sky lanterns can be dangerous. Always follow local guidelines, release in designated areas, and be mindful of where lanterns land. Especially with kids!
